25% of the single-use pollution on our trails is drinks containers.
Introducing the Deposit Return Scheme.
You might notice we’re a little bottle and can obsessed this autumn - we promise we have good reason. Drinks containers are actually one of the most commonly found items of single-use pollution in our wild places.
We’re supercharging all the juicy citizen science from our Autumn Trail Cleans to tell a new story about drinks packaging pollution, thanks to the UK’s Deposit Return Scheme (DRS), coming into force in October 2027. This is the last autumn our trails will look like this.
Learn more about the scheme here. Or better yet, attend an Autumn Trail Clean and learn from our A-TEAMers what you can expect from DRS!
How will the scheme work?
#1 A redeemable deposit of 20p is placed on specific drinks containers (PET plastic bottles, and aluminium cans) when bought at a shop.
#2 Once the drink has been consumed, you can return the container to a local collection point to claim the 20p back.
(There’s no need for a receipt or proof of purchase, so anyone can return their own drinks containers or ones that they find, as long as they’re in good nick. Meaning our Trasher Hunt has just gone up a level in reward.)
#3 The returned item will be recycled and made back into new drinks containers maximising the life of the materials and resources used!
This means we can all chip in to help clean up our communities, trails and wild places – and get something for it! This scheme has over a 90% success rate.
