What is Pick, Dig, Ride?

Pick, Dig, Ride (or PDR) is a unique event which takes a holistic approach to trail stewardship. Through our approach, participants experience three things - environmental action, building sustainable trails, and enjoyment in nature. All in one day!

This year we are inviting individuals involved with trail associations, bike clubs, or informal trail groups to join us at Glassie Bunkhouse, Aberfeldy, for a unique ‘Train the Trainer’ day. You’ll leave with the skills, knowledge and inspiration to deliver your own Pick, Dig, Ride events.

Come and join our Trash Free Trails A-TEAM, friends and family out on the trails, learn more about how you can mould the PDR concept for your own use, in your local area, and for your own communities.

What can I expect?

Firstly, you can expect everything you know and love from a Trash Free Trails event - some serious fun, education, and riding bikes! In addition, you’ll get to experience a Pick, Dig, Ride from start to finish, covering citizen science inputs, insights into environmental education and a chance to speak directly to experts about the methods that inform the event. You’ll leave with a practical toolkit for how to deliver your own PDR.

You’ll also have plenty of time to enjoy the amazing Aberfeldy surroundings, with riding opportunities, BBQ (if that Scottish liquid sunshine stays away), and live music!

Where does Pick, Dig, Ride come from?

Whilst we’d love to say that PDR came from the brains at Trash Free Trails HQ, we’re actually more proud to say that it came from one of our Ambassador team members, and their community up in Cambusbarron, Scotland. The Cambu Trail Collective crew piloted PDR way back in 2022, with the aim of bringing together all their trail activities under one event in order to easily engage their community in what trail stewardship is all about. It’s where that triangle of holistic trail stewardship comes from too, taking an approach which imprints on people what it means to ride and roam in such special places.

It’s not rocket science, rather it’s a brilliantly simple way to engage everyone in what it means to look after your wild places - with a heavy slant on riding your bikes at the same time!
